Portraits: Rev. Scott Henry

My name is Scott Henry, and I am a sinner redeemed solely and completely by the person and work of Jesus Christ.

I was born and reared in Michigan, and was baptized, catechized, and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod), Milan, MI. I continued as a member of St. Paul’s throughout my college years, but even though I partook of all the outward rites of the church, I was, nevertheless, an unsaved individual.

After high school graduation, I studied four years at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI, with a major in Criminal Justice. I then moved to California to pursue employment with LAPD. A few years later I met my wife Maria and we were married in 1989. We have one daughter, Ashley, who is currently a senior at Dordt College.

In 1991, while driving home from work, the Lord saved me while listening to a man read the Scriptures on a radio broadcast. The Lord regenerated my soul, planted faith in my heart, and enabled me to trust in the Gospel of Jesus Christ—what amazing grace that saved a wretched sinner like me!

After my conversion, Maria and I began attending Calvary Chapel in Palmdale, CA, with a desire to know the Savior through His Word. The Lord subsequently saved Maria within 3 months of attending Calvary Chapel. Shortly thereafter, I began to sense the Lord leading me into the gospel ministry, so I began attending the Calvary Chapel Bible College. It was during this time that the Lord opened my eyes to the doctrines of grace and to the world of Reformed theology. After five years at Calvary Chapel we left and began attending Grace Reformed Church (RCUS), Lancaster, CA. We soon became members, and I was elected as an elder a couple years later. Soon after, I was encouraged by the consistory of Grace Reformed Church to pursue seminary training. I was taken under care of the Western Classis as a student for the ministry, and a few years later my family and I made the move from California to South Dakota where I attended Heidelberg Theological Seminary, which is now located in Sioux Falls, SD. In 2004, I began serving as pastor of Zion Reformed Church, Menno, SD, and remained there until May 2011 when I accepted the call to serve as pastor at Grace Reformed Church, Lancaster, CA.

I rejoice in the Lord who redeemed me with His perfect law-fulfilling life and sin-atoning death, and count it a privilege and a joy to serve the Lord of lords and the King of kings as a preacher of the gospel of Jesus Christ. “Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Corinthians 5:20–21)
